Star Trek and Green Lantern come from two different universes (television and graphic novels) – universes which in most worlds would never meet. Yet Mike Johnson has made a very nice first attempt to bring these very different worlds together.

The characters from both universes are present – from Star Trek we have the essential characters – Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhura, Chkov, and Scotty. The Green Lantern universe brings the collection of rings – both good and evil – representing the emotional spectrum of colors and the Green Lantern Corp including appearances from Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner, among others.

The story is a fun reminder of the histories of both story lines, but the new book never seems to take off and grab this reader. Having said that, the premise has promise; this reader will hope to see more sories featuring two of my favorite Sci-Fi and graphic novel characters from an earlier generation working together to protect the universe. And there are hints dropped that there may be more to come. I will continue to hope.

All the original characters from the original Star Trek are back - Captain Kirk, Spock, Dr. McCoy, Bones, Sulu, Uhura, etc. In one episode we even meet Dr. Julian Bashir (from Deep Space 9) and Dr. Beverly Crusher from a future U.S.S. Enterprise. We even find a visit from the Hologram Doctor that served the personnel on the U.S.S. Voyager. Together they bring together the spirit, fun, and adventure found throughout the Star Trek Universe.

Three stories (2 - forty page stories and 1 - twenty page story) take the reader through several decades of space travel. The crew’s adventures required breaking the prime directive and finding a cure for a devastating illness that incapacitates without killing its victims.

Was I sitting on the edge of my seat? No - I have seen enough Star Trek episodes who wins each battle; regardless, I was eagerly awaiting the climax of each episode to see how the actors would get out of the various situations in which they found themselves. I was taken back to my high school years when Star Trek first hit the airwaves. This graphic novel made it a pleasant journey.

Six stories from the original Star Trek universe was too much for this old timer to resist.  John Byrne had done an excellent job of resurrecting the characters, settings, and scenarios from those brought to life by Jim Kirk, Spock, Leonard McCoy (aka ”Bones”), Montgomery Scott (“Scotty”), Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov on the small screen.  Using a photo realistic technique that gives renewed life to the characters, the stories in this compilation play well to the eye.

At just over 100 pages the current graphic novel combines six previously published stories, plus one new story, into a delightful collection - just right for a couple of nights of light reading.  Turn off the TV, put aside the remote, stop surfing the net, and reminisce about an earlier time (?) when we were called to

To explore strange new worlds,

To seek out new life and new civilizations,

To boldly go where no man has gone before.
